The art of user led design
A common feature shared amongst some of the best inventions is how easy they are to use.
Hammers, plasters, frisbees, Crocs, post-it notes… Sometimes the greatest inventions are the simplest ones. A common feature shared amongst some of the best inventions is how easy they are to use.
User Experience, also known as UX, is the study of how a user interacts with a product or system.
At Design Reality, we’re committed to keeping the end user in mind at every stage of the design process. But what does this look like?
UX in practice
Testing and sampling prototypes is an essential part of the design process; not just to make sure the product works as intended but, to make sure the product is suitable for the user.
One recent example of UX in practice can be seen in when we were approached by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to produce 3d printed door openers so that staff and visitors could open hospital doors without using their hands.
They initially contacted us to manufacture a design they had sourced from the internet – but through research and testing we found it simply wasn’t fit for purpose in the healthcare environment. Not only were the materials not cleanable, they were not robust enough for constant use and were only suitable for one type of door used in the hospital.
By visiting the hospitals themselves, we were able to create a series of designs which overcame these issues – creating a cleanable, hard-wearing product that could be used on vertical and horizontal handles.
Once the design was finalised, we produced prototypes for user testing. Seeing that they worked both in theory and practice we could move on to production.
Keeping the user in mind at every stage of the process meant we were able to successfully overcome issues before they arose and create a practical, usable product that helps reduce the spread of infection across hospitals.
As professional design agency, we can help you with research, testing and prototyping to ensure you keep the end-user at the heart of your design.
